Why thanks, my job is pretty cool!

You can get a full rundown of my long and winding “career” (ha) on my LinkedIn page, but the TL:DR version is: I did newspaper in college, as well as a ton of internships, and then interned more after I graduated until I got hired full time at EW. Also, I wrote copy for a daily deals site for six months, which I do not recommend as it was soul-suckingly boring.

While we up here in the Great White North would maintain otherwise, it seems as if there never seems to be any shortage of Americans who, looking for a giggle or two, decide to look above them and think “hey, let’s make fun of that weird ‘eh’ thing they say all the time.” Ooh, witty. You really got us there. Such an incident came about on last Friday afternoon, when Hillary Busis at Entertainment Weekly decided to post on ew.com a whole diatribe dedicated to all those fun times when Americans have decided to make use of pop culture to tear us to shreds. Clearly, the comments board lighted up immediately, with a few back and forths from Canadians and Americans about whether we care or not (“This is lame, not that I care” “Whatevers Canuck, you OBVIOUSLY care enough to comment on it.”)

Well, you’re right. Some people might not care, but I do.

There’s nothing quite like someone poking fun at your national identity to get you in full beaver tail-slapping mode. And Ms. Busis seems to think that perhaps it would just be fun to show how easy it is to make fun of Canadians.

Pointing out instances in which American pop culture makes fun of Canada is not the same thing as saying “Canada sucks.” In fact, considering how much Degrassi I’ve watched, I’d say my Canada appreciation levels are much higher than those of the average American.
